Microsoft released Office 2024 as the latest perpetual license version of their productivity suite. Unlike Microsoft 365, it’s a one-time purchase—no subscription, no renewal. But is it a meaningful upgrade from Office 2021? And how does it compare to 365? Here’s a thorough look at what’s new and whether it’s worth the move.
What Is Microsoft Office 2024?
Office 2024 is the fifth major perpetual (one-time purchase) release of Microsoft Office. It includes the classic Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. Like previous perpetual releases, it receives security updates but doesn’t get continuous new feature updates like Microsoft 365 subscribers do.
Microsoft Office 2024 is supported with security patches until October 2029—five years from release.
What’s New in Office 2024 Compared to Office 2021?
Word 2024 — New Features
- Improved collaboration tools: Better real-time co-authoring performance
- Ink improvements: Better stylus and pen support for Surface and tablet users
- Updated Designer integration: AI-powered design suggestions for document formatting
- Improved Accessibility Checker: More detailed guidance on making documents accessible
Excel 2024 — New Features
- New functions: TEXTBEFORE, TEXTAFTER, TEXTSPLIT, VSTACK, HSTACK, and other dynamic array functions added to perpetual Office for the first time
- Checkboxes in cells: Native checkbox support without workarounds
- Improved PivotTable recommendations: Better auto-suggestions for data analysis
- Python in Excel (limited): Some Excel 2024 versions include Python integration for advanced data analysis
PowerPoint 2024 — New Features
- Cameo integration: Insert your live camera feed into presentation slides
- Rehearse with Coach: AI-powered presentation coaching (available in 2024)
- Improved Slide design suggestions
Outlook 2024 — New Features
- New Outlook interface: The redesigned Outlook experience is included
- Better calendar views and scheduling
- Improved search performance
What Office 2024 Does NOT Include
It’s important to set expectations. Office 2024 does NOT include:
- Microsoft Copilot AI (exclusive to Microsoft 365 + Copilot add-on)
- Teams (Teams is now a standalone free app, but not bundled)
- 1 TB OneDrive storage (only 15 GB free storage)
- Continuous feature updates
- Multi-device licensing in most editions (typically 1 PC)
Office 2024 vs Office 2021: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
If You Use Excel Heavily
Yes—the new dynamic array functions alone (TEXTSPLIT, VSTACK, HSTACK, etc.) are significant quality-of-life improvements for power users. These functions were only available in 365 before. If you work with data regularly, Office 2024’s Excel is meaningfully better than 2021.
If You Primarily Use Word and PowerPoint
The improvements are incremental. For most document writing and presentation work, Office 2021 remains entirely adequate. The new features in Word and PowerPoint are welcome but not game-changing for typical workflows.
If You Care About Long-Term Support
Office 2021 mainstream support ends in 2026. Office 2024 is supported until 2029. If you’re planning ahead, upgrading now gives you three more years of security coverage without the ongoing cost of a 365 subscription.
Office 2024 vs Microsoft 365: Which Is Better?
| Factor | Office 2024 | Microsoft 365 |
|---|---|---|
| Cost model | One-time purchase | Annual/monthly subscription |
| Feature updates | None after purchase | Continuous |
| AI (Copilot) | No | Yes (with add-on) |
| OneDrive storage | 15 GB (free tier) | 1 TB |
| Multi-device use | 1 device (most editions) | 5 devices (Personal) |
| Best for | Stable, low-cost single PC | Active users, multiple devices |

The Verdict
Office 2024 is a worthwhile upgrade for Excel power users and for those who want extended support through 2029. For casual users already on 2021, the improvements are real but incremental—the upgrade is comfortable rather than urgent. For those considering 365, the perpetual license still wins on long-term cost if you don’t need AI features or heavy cloud integration.
